Definitions of common terms used in website indexing.
Core Terms
Crawl Budget: The number of URLs a crawler will fetch within a period.
Canonical URL: Preferred URL when multiple pages have similar content.
Sitemap: XML file listing discoverable URLs and metadata (lastmod).
Robots.txt: File instructing crawlers which paths to allow/disallow.
Meta Robots: Per-page directives for indexing and following links.
Structured Data: Machine-readable JSON-LD describing page content.
TTFB (Time to First Byte): Time from request to first byte received.
Indexing: Process of adding a URL to a search engine’s index.
GetIndexedNow Concepts
Submission: Request to notify search engines of a URL.
Credit: Unit consumed per successfully queued URL.
Queue: Pipeline where tasks await processing and track status.
Tag: Label applied to submissions for organization and reporting.
